New York State motor vehicle crash data are compiled by the DMV from the crash reports submitted by police agencies and by motorists. After one full year has been compiled, final data are reported by the DMV. Numbers for population and road miles are obtained from other government agencies.
New in 2016, preliminary, current-year and historical crash report data are available to the public via an Internet-based archive. This searchable database, known as the Traffic Safety Statistical Repository (TSSR), was built and is maintained by the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research (ITSMR) utilizing grant funding from the GTSC. The TSSR is multi-dimensional tool that not only captures crash data but can be expanded to incorporate additional data to meet users' needs.
Moving forward, county data packs available for viewing and download on the GTSC website will only include ticket data. All crash data can be obtained through the TSSR. Ticket data are presented for a rolling three year period, currently 2012-2014.
